Part 61 Training

Under our Part 61 Training Program we offer a wide variety of courses.  These include the Private Pilot License, Instrument Rating, Commercial License, Certified Flight Instructor, Certified Flight Instructor- Instrument, and Multiengine Instructor.  We also offer both single and multiengine add-on ratings. Additionally, we have ATP rated instructors that can provide first-hand experience in training you for an ATP checkride.   Listed below are descriptions of the Part 61 courses that we offer.

Private Pilot: Airplane Single-Engine Land

The Private Pilot’s License is the entry point for a life-long journey of learning to fly.  Ground lessons are run concurrently with flight training.  Through study at home and meetings with your instructor, you will gain a detailed knowledge of aerodynamics, weather, flight planning, navigation, aircraft performance and systems, and much more.  This information will be presented before it is needed in flight so that you will understand what you are trying to accomplish once inside the aircraft.  Flight training will be based on the knowledge acquired from the ground training.  Initial flights will focus on basic handling of the aircraft.  More advanced flights will develop the pilot’s skills in performance takeoffs and landings.  Safety is always a focus, whether it is staying safe in the training environment, learning to operate the aircraft safely, or practicing emergency procedures.

Private Pilot: Airplane Multiengine Land Add-On Rating

After the private pilot license is obtained we can offer you a course which allows you to fly multiengine aircraft.  Multiengine aircraft generally offer greater speed and, when operated by a proficient pilot, safety.  Pilots adding on a multiengine rating to their private pilot certificate are generally intending to become multiengine aircraft owners or career-track pilots looking to build multiengine time.

Our ground training will cover multiengine aerodynamics, emergency procedures, aircraft systems, multiengine performance data, maneuver briefings, and flow and checklist use.  Standardized procedures are used to ensure that multiengine training is performed safely.  Much of the multiengine training is on single engine operations, both simulated and real.

Instrument Rating: Airplane Single/Multi Engine Land

The instrument rating is one lesson after another on flying precisely and “staying ahead of the aircraft”.  You will be introduced into a whole new world of flight planning, flying, navigation, communications, and safety considerations.  This is a valuable course for any pilot as it creates a larger margin on safety- even if you don’t intend on flying in instrument conditions.  For most commercial pilots, these skills are essential because you won’t have the luxury of flying on only VFR days.

This course covers both the ground and flight training required to become a proficient IFR pilot.  Training covers flight planning, proper methods of linking each phase of flight in the IFR environment, resource management, and procedures for managing abnormal and emergency procedures, just to name a few.  Many of Air Center’s instructors have considerable “actual” time and can pass on their first-hand experience of flying in the clouds.  You will find that this real world experience is frequently missing at some schools.

Commercial Pilot: Airplane Single/Multi Engine Land

The commercial pilot’s license is used by some as a launch point for a new career or by others as a means by which to improve their piloting skill.  Although there is overlap with the Private Pilot Course curriculum, the expectations are greatly elevated.

The Commercial Pilot Course will review the FAA regulations pertaining to Parts 61 and 91.  You will also be introduced to Parts 119, 135 and 121 as well.  These portions of the regulations describe the rules governing commercial operations which you might soon be employed under.  We will also deepen your understanding of aircraft performance calculations, weather, flight planning, aircraft systems, and aerodynamics.  Flight training will perfect the VFR skills that you have already been trained in and introduce new ones as well.  This license allows you access to the world of professional pilots, and you will be expected to uphold this standard.

Airline Transport Pilot:

The Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) Certificate is the highest level of pilot certification.  It is required for pilots that will be acting as a captain in an airline operation.  The ATP requires an understanding of aviation knowledge and flight skills above and beyond that which is required for the commercial license.  In times when the economy was strong, ATP certification was usually incorporated into a checkride once employed by an airline.  In the current times, an ATP license is a great way to make yourself stand out above the competition.  Air Center of Salt Lake is fortunate to have multiple instructors available that have achieved this level of certification.  Access to such instructors is valuable in that they can provide first hand experience to you regarding the challenges that you will face during training and the checkride.

Certified Flight Instructor: Airplane Single Engine Land

The Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) allows a pilot the privilege to instruct other people in their pursuits towards aviation licenses.  Specifically, depending on your own credentials, you would be able to instruct private and commercial students.  This certificate is the gateway for many career track pilots to build experience before landing a job with an airline, freight, or charter company.  It is quite impressive how much you will learn about flying while teaching others.  Even as the instructor, you will be introduced to new ways to think about aspects of flying and will certainly be shown a number of ways that you shouldn’t do things.

CFI training takes all of the general topics that you have covered throughout your private and commercial training and plunges you to depths that you hoped didn’t exist.  People will consider you to be an expert on all topics aviation and the training does its best to make that a reality.  Air Center of Salt Lake has a number of instructors that have been in the business for many years and can present you with very applicable knowledge.

Certified Flight Instructor- Instrument

The Certified Flight Instructor- Instrument (CFII) rating allows a pilot the privilege to instruct pilots towards an instrument rating or the instrument training needed for a commercial license.  Holding instrument instructor privileges on your CFI certificate provides you with certain advantages.  Instrument instructing will provide you with a far deeper knowledge of the instrument world, greater variety in your duties as an instructor, and a wider market from which you can draw students.  If you plan on working as a CFI, this rating is essential.

Multiengine Instructor

The Multiengine Instructor (MEI) rating allows a pilot the privilege to instruct pilots towards a multiengine rating.  This privilege will improve your comfort level in twin engine aircraft and will also make the single engine procedures second nature.  Many career-track pilots consider this to be an essential means by which to build multiengine time towards their end goal.  Air Center of Salt Lake is fortunate to have a number of instructors available that have over 500 hours of multiengine time.  This experience helps to ensure a safe training environment and thorough coverage of practices that will keep you safe.
